As this was my third visit to the museum, I figured it was time I got a closer look at Mark Twain Lake,
the 29-square-mile body of water formed after the Salt River was dammed in 1966.

The full immensity of the lake can be seen in this Google map, on which the red dot covers the entire
area visible in the previous picture. Surprisingly, I saw
no one fishing or boating on the lake.

Next stop was the actual site of Mark Twain’s birth, where conference attendees studied historical markers.

This picture of the birthplace memorial taken around 1920 shows a bust of Mark Twain that was later
removed  to the birthplace museum to prevent vandalism. The structures in the photo are now long gone,
and the official population of Florida is currently only two persons (up from zero in 2011).

Speaking of being paralyzed with fright ... in the absence
of Mark Twain’s bust, something truly frightening
has replaced it (photo by Donna Mac Donnell).
